This position operates within the Wastewater Surveillance (WWS) Program of the Environmental Health Epidemiology Bureau (EHEB), Center for Health Protection (CHP), Public Health Division (PHD) in NM Health.

Why does the job exist?

The primary purpose of the job is to work with water treatment facilities, the Scientific Laboratory, and the CDC to maintain and grow NMDOH's wastewater surveillance system to monitoring for various infectious disease pathogens. The wastewater epidemiologist would work with the wastewater surveillance program supervisor and epidemiologist specialist to identify trends in wastewater data, update the CDC and NMDOH data dashboards, and communicate results with state and national stakeholders for public health action.

How does it get done?

Job duties include communicating with wastewater treatment facility operators for maintenance of sampling; analysis of data received from the state lab; report and disseminate info to the CDC and state and local stakeholders. The incumbent will staff the EHEB on call line 1-2 days per month and participate in legislative bill analysis during NM legislative session.

Ideal Candidate

*Experience conducting lab or epidemiological surveillance for reportable conditions.
*Experience with data analysis programs, R preferred.
*Experience with presenting public health data to stakeholders.

Minimum Qualification

Master's Degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, Science, Social Sciences or Statistics. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required education

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer usage.
