Wildlife Biologist

The incumbent will be part of a team that will lead field work and data gathering for big game management. The incumbent will be responsible for a broad range of biological assessments and data management to support development of conservation and management strategies for wildlife species and their habitats. The incumbent will closely coordinate with other program staff and South Coast Region functions and involved local, State, and Federal agencies, The incumbent will assist with responding to public safety calls along with Enforcement personnel. The position coordinates fieldwork activities, collects, organizes and analyzes data, and prepares reports. Good communication skills are important as the incumbent will also provide public outreach and education, and participate in public meetings and seminars.The primary geographical focus of this position will be in San Diego and Orange counties, but the incumbent may conduct investigations and lead teams and projects throughout the South Coast Region.

This position is a 12 month Limited Term (LT) and may be extended up to 24 months or become permanent.

If you currently have permanent status in your position and have passed probation, you have mandatory reinstatement rights into your former position at the end of this LT appointment. If you have not had prior permanent or probationary civil service status, you will be separated from state service.

Working Conditions
Office location will be at San Diego CDFW office; telework option may be considered. Work hours may be 10+ hours per day, atypical hours and on weekends. Exposure to temperature extremes is to be expected. Some overnight travel and camping will be required. Ability to drive a 4-wheel-drive vehicle and hike cross-country to remote survey sites in rugged terrain. Incumbent must be willing to work in remote locations and alone if necessary. Flying in helicopter and fixed-wing aircraft is required. Ability to use a computer keyboard in a sitting and/or standing position several hours a day. Ability to lift heavy and irregular items up to 40 lbs. Will interact with regional and branch staff, and members of the public via e-mail, telephone, and in-person in compliance with COVID-19 prevention best practices. Must attend occasional meetings.

Ability to wear a uniform, as appropriate. Possession of valid driver license required. Ability to drive up to 8-hours. Must be vaccinated against rabies virus with adequate current antibody titer or willing to receive pre-exposure rabies vaccinations. Must feel comfortable with potential close contact with imperiled and/or confined wild animals. Must complete mandatory wildlife capture training and firearms training within 6 months of hire. Must be willing and capable to competently use firearms as per the Department's Policy for Non-Enforcement Personnel. Must be willing and capable to competently use and possess wildlife restraint drugs and equipment. Must be willing to handle live animals, carcasses, and conduct simple tissue sampling and necropsies.

Special Requirements Experience with conducting technical research activities on a variety of wildlife species in the field. Ability to work independently; to communicate and manage high stress situations in a calm, organized and professional manner; and to represent agency viewpoint without personal conflicts. Must be willing to work atypical hours, 10+ hours per day, and on weekends.

Must be willing and capable to competently use firearms as per the Department's Policy for Non-Enforcement Personnel. Must be willing and capable to competently use and possess wildlife restraint drugs and equipment.
