Job Responsibilities
The employee will conduct face-to-face interviews with marine recreational anglers following protocols established by the NOAA Fisheries Marine Recreational Informational Program. The selected applicant will travel to assigned sites to interview anglers about their fishing experiences, weigh, measure, and identify fish caught by anglers. Assigned sites can include beaches, piers, docks, jetties, and access points for private, charter, and head boats.

Job Duties Include:

  • Successfully complete training, including survey procedures and fish identification tests
  • Follow documented survey procedures
  • Travel to assigned fishing access sites to interview anglers about their fishing experiences
  • Occasionally work on head boats (for-hire vessels) for at-sea data collection
  • Identify fish to species level
  • Complete survey on handheld tablet application

Minimum and Additional Requirements

A bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, wildlife management or related technical area.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of marine fisheries, waterways, and public boat landings throughout coastal South Carolina. Experience conducting surveys, working with handheld tablets, and online assignment tracking applications. Ability to work with limited supervision and professionally interact with the public, recreational/commercial fishermen, wholesale dealers, and retailers. Ability to identify to species level common saltwater fish and take length and weight measurements. Knowledge of SC marine fisheries laws and commercial/recreational fishing trends. Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends. Work location will be primarily in the Bluffton/Hilton Head region of Beaufort County.
