Job Responsibilities
The Wildlife Biologist II will participate in all aspects of the SEAMAP Costal Trawl Survey in the field, which may include over 40 days at sea per year on research vessels up to 110 feet in length.
Duties include:
-pre and post-cruise activities, assist with gear development and retrieval, processing the catch, and data management.
- Serve in a leadership role on board the vessel.
- Assist with all pre-cruise preparations including: selection of supplies and equipment, maintenance of onboard computers, CTD, electronic fish measuring boards, and electronic balances, including back-ups and software.
- Participate in quality control, security, and entry of data related to life history. Assist with the preparation of reports, proposals, outreach, or publications related to life history.
- Lead the processing and interpretation of life history samples archived from the field for laboratory evaluation. Lead life history data analyses for project dissemination.
- Supervise staff on the project.
- Maintain issued equipment in operational readiness, complete and submit annual inventories, and relevant transfer forms.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
A master's degree in biology, chemistry or related technical area field; or a bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, wildlife management or related technical area and two (2) years of experience relevant to the job.
Preferred Qualifications
- ocean going expertise, preferably with scientific sampling (fishing) gear
- knowledge of general laboratory safety practices
- knowledge of southeastern coastal fishing species
- Expertise with removing otoliths and reproductive tissue from fish
- expertise with processing and interpretation of otoliths and reproductive tissues, including histology.
- Analytical and writing skills necessary to complete basic analyses and reports.
- Sound working knowledge of MS Office suite, and preferably R-statistical software
