The Division of Preclinical Development in ADME and Discovery Toxicology at Merck Research Laboratories is seeking a dynamic and collaborative Associate Principal Scientist to join the Transporter & In Vitro Technologies (T&IVT) in West Point, PA.  The T&IVT group is a center of excellence supporting Merck’s discovery and development portfolio by developing and executing assays that predict the impacts of drug transporters and metabolizing enzymes on absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion (ADME), drug-drug interactions (DDIs), efficacy, and toxicity of drugs.     

Successful candidates should have an in-depth understanding of drug transporters and their impact on the discovery and development of new chemical entities; the experiences of working independently to design, conduct and interpret complex in vitro studies to solve program related issues.  Candidates must have demonstrated leadership as well as excellent written and verbal communication skills in a team environment.  Candidates should have the capability to establish a close collaborative relationship with other PPDM functional teams to drive discovery and development programs.  Candidates will also be expected to work closely with colleagues across our global network to advance our scientific strategy via developing novel tools/technologies to improve translation of in vitro data to predict transporter related drug disposition, DDIs, and interplay with drug metabolizing enzymes. 

Position Qualifications:

Education Minimum Requirement:

  • A Ph.D. or equivalent degree in a relevant field (e.g. Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biochemistry, Biology, Molecular and Cell Biology, Pharmacology, Biomedical Engineering) with 2+ years of experience

  • A MS or equivalent degree in a relevant field (e.g. Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biochemistry, Biology, Molecular and Cell Biology, Pharmacology, Biomedical Engineering) with 8+ years of experience

Required Experience and Skills:

  • Knowledge in drug transporters and their roles in ADME, DDIs, efficacy and toxicity

  • Design, conduct, and interpretation of complex in vitro studies with ability to solve challenging problems 

  • Working knowledge of ADME science for small molecules and peptides with a fundamental understanding of drug discovery and development

  • Ability to work independently and effectively with some technical & strategic guidance from scientific supervisor

  • Critical thinking to drive data-based decisions

  • Strong leadership, interpersonal, organization, communication, and collaboration skills in a team environment

  • Ability to thrive with increasing levels of responsibility and mentor/guide junior scientists

Preferred Experience and Skills:

  • Experience in partnering with CROs to generate quality in vitro transporter and metabolizing enzyme related data

  • Experience in use of in vitro data and mechanistic modeling to predict transporter and enzyme related PK and DDIs

  • Experience with novel in vitro tools such as microphysiological systems (alternative in vitro culture systems, organs on a chip)

  • General knowledge of pharmacokinetics (PK) and drug metabolizing enzymes
