Vaccine Analytical Research & Development in Merck Research Labs, West Point, PA is seeking a candidate for an assay and automation development position. The successful candidate will develop automated high-throughput cell-based assays to quantitate viral infectivity, utilizing automated liquid handling and integrated robotics systems. Responsibilities include planning and executing experiments to compare and select cell lines, optimize assays and automation performance, application programming for automation of assay control and operation, data reduction, and data reporting. The position will support vaccine development.
The successful candidate will provide technical oversight for a small group of scientists, and will be responsible for all aspects of assay development involving the use of robotic instrumentation to develop and automate cell-based assays. This includes investigating new technologies and assay techniques, and incorporating new instrumentation into robotic systems. This position requires knowledge of aseptic cell-culture technique, and imaging systems used for detecting viral infection. The candidate will possess excellent communication skills and ability to work in a team environment. Experience with computer programming language is strongly preferred. Laboratory automation, industrial experience, statistics experience and a working knowledge of GMP/GLP would be beneficial.
Education Minimum Requirement:
BS/BA/MS degree in Engineering, Science or Informatics with 10 years experience in assay development/automation
PhD degree in Engineering, Science or Informatics with 3 years experience in assay development/automation
Required Experience and Skills:
• Experience with cell-based assays, such as viral infectivity or plaque assays.
• Experience with cell culture.
• Previous experience with a programming language, image processing, or system control applications (eg Visual Basic, C++, Java, MatLab )
• Excellent organizational and problem solving skills with the ability to work on a team.
Preferred Experience and Skills:
• Exceptional planning skills and ability to prioritize and track multiple projects.
• Demonstrates the ability to work independently and/or in a team environment and is results oriented.
• Understanding of the regulatory guidelines governing operation of GMP laboratories and documentation.
